This briefing is built from a single primary source — the transcript of the Prime Minister's address. Here is how it was made, and how to read it responsibly.

The purpose of this project is narrow and honest: take one important speech, explain in plain language what it actually commits to, and assess both the opportunity and the risk without cheerleading or cynicism.

The Source

Everything here derives from the transcript of Anthony Albanese's address on artificial intelligence, delivered at the University of Sydney. All quotations are drawn directly from that transcript. Because the transcript originates from live captioning, it contains minor artefacts — for example, "MBN" appears where "NBN" is meant, and the papal encyclical title is rendered phonetically. Where the meaning is clear, we quote the intended sense and note the artefact rather than reproducing errors silently.

No external reporting, government document or third-party dataset was used. This is a close reading of one text, not a survey of the field.

Reporting vs Analysis

The briefing keeps a firm line between two kinds of statement:

Reporting

What the speech says

Direct quotation and faithful paraphrase of the Prime Minister's commitments and claims. Part one — The Announcement — is almost entirely this.

Analysis

What we make of it

Judgements about feasibility, tension and risk. These are labelled "analysis" and belong to the author, not the Prime Minister. Parts two, three and four carry most of it — Part four is explicitly forward-looking scenario reasoning.

Where the two might blur — for instance, the three readings of "net generator" — the interpretation is flagged as ours, and the underlying quote is given so readers can judge for themselves.

The three charts in this briefing use real, sourced data — not illustrative estimates. Each carries its source and a link to the primary reference:

Rooftop-solar and data-centre water figures cited in the text carry the same treatment — sourced to the Clean Energy Council and the IEA respectively. Where a figure is derived or rounded for scale (for example, converting a percentage of national generation into an approximate comparison), that is stated in the caption rather than presented as a precise measurement. The interpretive graphics that remain — the tensions heatmap in Part three, and the posture spectrums and segment-by-mechanism matrix in Part four — are explicitly qualitative judgement devices, labelled as such.

An earlier draft of this briefing used illustrative "conceptual" charts to visualise the speech's framing. Those were replaced with measured data because a chart of invented numbers, however carefully disclaimed, is worth less than a smaller set of real ones.

Design

The briefing uses an editorial, print-feature design system — Fraunces and Newsreader for display and body, Inter for interface — on a warm paper palette with a eucalyptus-green and gold accent. It is a static site: HTML, CSS and a little vanilla JavaScript, with Chart.js loaded from a CDN for the data figures. No build step, no tracking beyond what the host provides.

Who Built This

A Note on Fairness

Part three is critical, but it is criticism of specification, not of intent. A vision speech is meant to set direction; the detail is meant to come in the standards and legislation the speech promises. Flagging what is undefined is not an accusation of bad faith — it is a map of where the real decisions still have to be made. If the drafting answers the open questions well, the ambition of the speech will have been earned.

The applause belongs to the legislation, not the speech. This briefing is a guide to knowing the difference.
